Routes can be found at the link https://avtoprokat-maxrent.ru/marshruty , but we offer a brief overview of the work done.
East direction
This is one of the most popular routes, for which travel agencies allow 6-8 hours, including travel. With a rented car, you can adjust your trip by visiting more places at once.
First on the list is Chernyakhovsk. Almost 80% of pre-war buildings have been preserved here. Be sure to visit the ruins of the medieval castle Insterburg and Georgenburg Castle. The most unusual kindergarten in Russia is located in the Brandeis Villa from 1894. Inside, decorative elements and furniture, a mosaic floor and a welcome inscription at the entrance in Latin have been preserved.
In Gusev, on the site of a destroyed church, the first church in Russia was erected in memory of the people who died during the First World War. These are not only soldiers of all nationalities, but also civilians and parishioners.
In small Krasnoznamensk you will be transported back in time. There are entire streets left here with pre-war one- and two-story houses under the original red tiles and cobblestone pavements. Lazdenen’s church has retained its original appearance from the end of the 16th century. An unexploded shell from the First World War still sticks out in one of the walls.
Ragnit Castle in Neman was built in 1409. Part of the walls and a clock tower 25 meters high have been preserved, as well as basements, where you can go down as part of an excursion group. The thickness of the castle walls in some places reaches two meters.
South direction
Another popular route includes the cities of Ozersk, Pravdinsk and Bagrationovsk.
In cozy Ozersk, many residential buildings from the early twentieth century have been preserved, which are still used for their intended purpose. You can visit the post office, the infirmary building and the mill from the late 19th century. The visiting card of the city is the Darkemen Lutheran Church built in 1842.
In Pravdinsk, the remains of a fortress wall and a ditch around it dating back to the beginning of the 14th century, the Friedland Church, and the building of the Friedland district hospital have been preserved. The main attraction is the still operating Pravdinskaya hydroelectric power station, which came into operation in 1920. There is a park with walking paths all around, and a city beach on the shore of the reservoir.
In addition to architecture, Bagrationovsk is famous for its lakes. After visiting the fort of the medieval castle of Preussisch-Eylau and the modern Orthodox church with a myrrh-streaming icon, you can sit on the shore of one of the lakes and admire the beauty of the border town.
Western direction
A visit to the westernmost city of Russia, Baltiysk, is included in the tour program of all operators in the region. However, it is better to go to the city of military glory by rented car. This way you will visit not only the main attractions, but you will also be able to stroll along the Northern Pier and Morskoy Boulevard, looking at ships, go down to the city beach and even cross to the Baltic Spit.
The coastal strip in Baltiysk is the widest. If you move further from the city, wild beaches begin. There are no amenities here, but there are few people and the same white sand. The sands of the Baltic are called singing; this is a unique phenomenon for our country. If you walk on such sand at least once on a warm day, you will immediately understand what we are talking about.
The northwestern direction is the resort city of Zelenogradsk, which is also the only city of cats in Russia. There are many pre-war buildings preserved here, a street with historical buildings, and the largest number of museums by the standards of a small town. Be sure to stroll along the boardwalk, where there is a 50-meter Ferris wheel, and visit the 1905 water tower, which houses the Murarium cat museum.
The programs of excursion tours include the main directions, but very little is allocated for sightseeing and there is absolutely no time left for a beach holiday. If you want to enjoy the contemplation of architecture and natural beauty, visit remote places and walk along the seashore, collecting pieces of amber, it is better to use a rented car. The rental cost will not exceed the price of the tour, but you will manage your time yourself.
