On April 20, the Museum of Moscow will open the exhibition “Moscow Without Outskirts. Preobrazhenka” is a continuation of the interdisciplinary project about districts and for districts, which started in 2021.
Each exhibition of the project "Moscow without suburbs" is built around one thesis, through which the identity of the area is revealed. Thus, when studying Taganka, the curatorial team discussed such concepts as the border, outskirts and center of the city, and in Kapotnya, parallels were drawn between the urban area and the industrial city. For Preobrazhenka, the researchers came up with the slogan "District of districts".
Today, the Preobrazhensky District consists of many completely separate territories. It is easy to read two equivalent and completely independent spaces in its structure - Preobrazhenskoye and Cherkizovo. However, Preobrazhenskoye itself, which inherits the village of the same name, resembles a patchwork quilt - large territories of former and existing factories live an original life, and the streets connecting them are transit zones. Residents of the district, tenants and employees of offices occupying industrial buildings practically do not meet each other, existing as if in completely different places.
At the exhibition “Moscow without suburbs. Preobrazhenka” you can learn about the past and present of individual spaces, which the curators have assigned the status of “districts”. The audience will get acquainted with the life of the old Cherkizovo and the Old Believer communities, find out where the working settlement is located, see unique materials about the fans of the Lokomotiv football club and meet with artists and artisans working today in the empty workshops of the Electrozavod.
More than fifty people who live or work in the Preobrazhenskoye district will become co-authors of the exhibition. They will share their memories, photographs and things that will be included in the exhibition along with items from the collection of the Museum of Moscow. Thus, the exposition will present a photographic history of the demolition of the old Cherkizovo and the construction of a new district, taken by schoolchildren in 1970; archive of a family of amateur photographers - footage of the 1930s, 1950s and 1970s from Ninth Rota Street; objects and shrines of religious communities that share the space of the former St. Nicholas Monastery - Orthodox and Old Believers; equipment and photographs of the Lokomotiv FC museum. To participate in the project, you must fill out a special form.
The exhibition will be accompanied by educational and excursion programs. Events of the public program will be held both in the Museum of Moscow and in the courtyard of the Electrozavod. A detailed schedule will appear on the project website.
