The initiator of his appearance was the artist Lyudmila Belova, who in 2007 gathered in St. Petersburg the creators of her own portraits. The only restriction was the size of the canvas - 50 x 40 cm.

Subsequently, the competition was held in other cities of Russia, to which Krasnoyarsk joined in 2014. In 2017, artists from Khakassia took part in the Self-Portrait + project. The exposition, which opened under the title "Talk About Myself," contains works by about 40 artists representing the Khakass art school.

In total, about 180 self-portraits made in a variety of techniques were selected for the exhibition. Artists attribute self-portraits to the most complex genre of the art of painting. Some authors in them fully reveal themselves, while others hide under an invented mask.
