YAROSLAVL. Since July 15, the Yaroslavl Art Museum has been waiting for visitors to get acquainted with the new exhibition project presented in the exhibition space of the governor’s house. Museum staff created an exhibition dedicated to the work of Vasily Vasilyevich Vereshchagin, a famous Russian travel artist.

The number of works on display is not too large, but they are selected so that the exhibition fully reflects the variety of genres, themes and directions characteristic of Vereshchagin’s work. Visitors will see the works created by the artist during his travels and according to their impressions, after returning to their homeland.

His travels often took place in the most difficult conditions, since he also visited those places of military operations. The result of each trip was numerous studies, which upon returning home became pictures. The artist was interested in absolutely everything - the culture of the countries where he visited, the customs of the peoples living on their territory.

Vereshchagin devoted almost his entire life to traveling. He traveled to India, Palestine, the Balkans, Turkestan, the USA and Japan, and traveled to our country from the Crimea to the North. Studies for the artist were a way to capture everything seen on these trips. However, each sketch created by Vereshchagin, regardless of what material he was written on, became a finished work.

In fact, each of them was a full-fledged picture, only a small size. It is difficult to find an artist capable of performing ethnographic sketches, better than Vereshchagin. There are many military scenes in his creative heritage, but Vereshchagin never called himself a battle-man. A professional military man, he showed war in his works as a huge human drama.
