July 18 in the gallery "Belyaevo" Association "Exhibition Halls of Moscow" will open the exhibition "Painting by Words / Between Text and Image", dedicated to the 125th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Mayakovsky. This is a joint art project of the State Museum of V.V. Mayakovsky and the Exhibition Halls of Moscow Association.
The close connection between poetry and painting, characteristic of the art of the Russian avant-garde, can be seen at the exhibition in the graphic and pictorial works of Vladimir Mayakovsky, David Burliuk, Elena Guro, Sergey Bobrov, Fedor Platov, Olga Rozanova, Vasily Kamensky, Sergey Gorodetsky. Some came to painting through poetry, while others, as artists, began to write poetry.
The poetry of Vladimir Mayakovsky blossomed thanks to painting. In his autobiography, “I Myself,” he noted that “concepts are poetic” and “concepts are pictorial” coexist in him since childhood. The “father of Russian futurism” David Burliuk declared himself a poet and artist, his impressionistic landscapes, “shifted constructions” with several points of view and intersecting planes, a gallery of portraits of figures of Russian emigration and representatives of American culture, created over the years spent in the USA, testify about his limitless art experiments. Numerous drawings by Vasily Kamensky, made with colored pencils in a “naive” style, with views of Kama, steamboats, planes, birds, hunting scenes, images are captured that he captured in his famous poem series “Tango with the Cows”. The talent of one of the leading artists of the Russian avant-garde Olga Rozanova was manifested, inter alia, in the design of futuristic publications. Her graphics and collages presented at the exhibition are complemented by skillfully made illustrations for needlework books from the beginning of the 20th century with all their “roughnesses” and “irregularities” of paper, printing and color.
The exhibition includes unique materials from the collections of the State Museum of V.V. Mayakovsky: paintings by Mayakovsky, drawings of the "Giraffe Series", posters "Windows of ROSTA", the profile of the poet, made by Alexander Rodchenko, paintings and graphic works by representatives of the Russian avant-garde, archival photographs, short-run illustrated poetry collections.
Dialogues of text and image are updated in the modern section of the exhibition, in the works of Eric Bulatov, Ilya Kabakov, Igor Shelkovsky, Rostislav Lebedev, Alexey Goncharenko, Alexander Pankin, Vagrich Bakhchanyan, Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, Dmitry Prigov presented from private collections. Here we consider not only the manifestations of personality at the same time as an artist and a writer, but also the dramaturgy of the relationship between a word and an image. The viewer can visually observe and experience the phenomenon of text visualization and, at the same time, the processes of endowing this text with an artistic image. “The word after painting” will appear in the form of a single installation - not only with the use of walls, but also with the internal space, which will house, like flags, visual texts of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya and Vagrich Bahchanyan.
The exhibition “Painting with words / Between text and image” will include lectures, tours, poetry readings, theater and music performances, film screenings, literary and art workshops. A detailed schedule will be available on the gallery website.
