On January 25, the exhibition “Yuri Nozhikov. Compressed time”, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the first popularly elected governor of the Irkutsk region. He headed the region from 1991 to 1997 and did a lot for the development of the culture of the Angara region. The exhibition includes more than 20 works of religious and secular art.
The traditions of caring for culture and art were supported by the top leadership of the state back in the 19th century. Suffice it to recall the statement of Alexander III, who said that “the dissemination of art is a matter of national importance.”
In the 1990s, the first governor of the Irkutsk region, Yuri Abramovich Nozhikov, remained faithful to these commandments. Many residents of Irkutsk and the region still remember his attentive attitude to culture, and especially to museums. Thanks to his assistance, the collection of the Irkutsk Art Museum was enriched with many works of art, including those by Irkutsk artists. Among them are Sergei Grigoriev, Nikolai Vershinin, Boris Desyatkin, Gennady Dragaev, Sergei Zhilin, Sergei Korenev, Gennady Kuzmin, Anatoly Pogrebnoy, Evgeniy Turunov and others. In addition, Yuri Nozhikov donated the most valuable “relief” icon of the 18th century to the museum. “Nikola Mozhaisky”, which is one of the pearls of the permanent exhibition of religious art of the Gallery of Siberian Art. The museum honors the memory of the first governor of the Irkutsk region and displays at the exhibition the most significant works associated with the name of Yuri Nozhikov.
