The world famous Italian photographer, theater and film director, screenwriter and producer John Randolph Pepper today presented his exhibition “Evaporations” in the main building of the Irkutsk Art Museum.
The exposition contains 42 black-and-white photographs that show the artist’s love for cities by the sea. They are united by the presence of the coastline and the water surface. Against the backdrop of the vast body of water, people look especially fragile. According to the photographer, it is on the edge of the coast that a human figure takes its true size. Pepper loves and feels water. He shot the water element in Naples and Thessaloniki, Geneva and Chicago, New York and St. Petersburg. Pepper has many water: here are resort beaches, cluttered shores of big cities, and the brutality of the elements (Pepper shot New York after Hurricane Sandy). Each time, the water tells the story of a person - from the serene bathers to the victims of the raging nature.
John Pepper took up photography at age 11. His artistic vision formed under the influence of Sam Shaw, John Ross and David Seymour, with whom he could communicate personally. A special influence was exerted on John by the founding father of modern photojournalism, Henri Cartier-Bresson, who was one of the first to adopt a 35-mm film and a hidden camera because he did not recognize staged photography. Pepper adopted the basic technique: he removes only on black and white film. He is interested not in the perfection of the frame or composition, but in the captured moment.
The exhibition "Evaporation" visited Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok. Until September 6, 2015, black-and-white photographs can be seen in the main building of Irkutsk Art Museum on Lenin 5. You can visit the exhibition with an entrance ticket to the museum, the price of which is 100 rubles for adults, 50 for schoolchildren, 10 for preschoolers. After Irkutsk, the exhibition route will continue through the Russian cities: Novosibirsk, Omsk, Yekaterinburg, Samara, and in 2016, spectators from Moscow and New York will see it.
The international project “Evaporation” is supported by the Italian Institute of Culture in Moscow and the Italian Institute of Culture in St. Petersburg.
