From April 29 to May 30, 2019, the St. Petersburg State Theater Library will host the exhibition “Gogol on the Russian Stage”, dedicated to the 210th birthday of N.V. Gogol.
Today, the status of the writer Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol - the great classic of not only Russian, but also world literature - does not need to be confirmed. The great demand for his works in our time allows us to perceive this anniversary as an event of global significance.
The exhibition consists of two parts - documentary and graphic.
The first part presents separate volumes of the works of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol from private libraries of artists of the Imperial Theaters - Nikolai Khodotov, Maria Savina and others. The director’s and prompter copies of the plays, first staged on the theatrical stages of St. Petersburg during the author’s lifetime, are exhibited: The Examiner (1836), scenes from the poem Dead Souls (1842), Marriage (1842), and Players (1843). The texts of the plays with various labels and drawings are supplemented with portraits of the first leading performers, posters, periodicals of the 30–40s of the XIX century with reviews of plays. It also demonstrates examples of the embodiment of Gogol’s works in a musical theater, and among them is the libretto of the opera by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Night Before Christmas” of 1895, as well as sketches of costumes and decorations for this performance.
The second part of the exhibition consists of sketches of theatrical artists stored in the St. Petersburg State Theater Library.
Drawings of costumes and sets - working materials that were used in the implementation of theatrical productions of works by N.V. Gogol in the 19th-21st centuries - allow us to imagine how the public saw them. Most of the works exhibited date back to the 20th century: these are sketches by I.M. Rabinovich, D.F. Popova, I.G. Segal, M.F. Kitaeva, R.M. Yunosheva, I.G. Cherednikova and other artists.
Gogol’s comedy The Examiner has not lost its relevance for centuries. The collection of the Theater Library has materials through which you can get acquainted with five options for the stage embodiment of this famous play. In addition, viewers will see the sketches of R.M. Young man to the opera D.D. Shostakovich "Nose", M.F. Kitaev to the performances "Adventures of Chichikov" and "Petersburg Tales", as well as E.Yu. Orlova to the tale "The Night Before Christmas."
