MOSCOW. In the repertoire of the Sovremennik Theater, a play staged based on the work of Lyudmila Ulitskaya, a famous Russian writer, first appeared. The premiere of the new play “Let’s Dance…”, born by Lyudmila Ulitskaya from the story “Women of Russian Villages” written earlier by the writer, took place on June 3 in Sovremennik, on Another Stage.
Lyudmila Ulitskaya chose the director for the production of her play herself. It was Andrzej Buben, a famous director who worked a lot in Poland, where he comes from, and is well known to Petersburg theatergoers. This is not the first time the director has worked with Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s works - the performance “Let’s Dance…” became his fifth production of plays by the playwright.
When working on the play, Andrzej Buben suggested to the author that the play lacks the ending to complete the play, so Ulitskaya supplemented the play, written several years ago, with the second part. In the first part, by the will of fate, in New York in the mid-nineties, there are three women who have a lot in common, and their meeting takes place at a time when everyone’s life has already taken place, but there is still time for joy, love and further life.
In the second part, completed by the playwright, she moved her heroines beyond the boundaries of earthly life, but at the same time the ending does not leave a feeling of bitterness. The heroines of the play, like the author who created them, continue to assert that love remains the main thing in the world. This means that the world without this feeling could not exist.
Ulitskaya says that the prototype of one of the heroines of the play was her friend, who had already passed away. The other two showed the character traits of women with whom the author met once. After watching the play, the playwright noted the high professionalism of the artists, saying that she was happy to present her play in Sovremennik.
