BEIJING. On the occasion of the 155th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian writer Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, the Chinese publishing house Shanu Inzhuguan published a collection of his letters translated into Chinese. More than two hundred letters written in different periods of life of a classic of world literature attracted the literary critic, theater connoisseur and translator Thun Damion, who translated them into his native language.
At a press conference on the release of Chekhov’s Selected Letters collection, Tun Damion admitted that even Chekhov’s plays could not reveal and deeply understand the essence of the writer as his letters, which he wrote almost every day. According to him, during his life Chekhov wrote few articles, but daily wrote letters in which he expressed his views on literature and life. It was in these letters that the great wisdom of A.P. Chekhov. More than four thousand messages published in Russia were read by Damion while working on the collection.
According to literary scholars, Chekhov’s epistolary prose is part of his literary heritage, which is an invaluable asset of literature. It is the letters of the great Russian writer that contain a large concentration of Chekhov’s human wisdom. He took great responsibility for his correspondence, but did not prepare it for publication. Chekhov’s letters became public only after his death, the writer did not leave any instructions in the will about them, and relatives almost immediately published six volumes of his correspondence.
In the Chinese collection "Chekhov’s Selected Letters" you can find messages to such famous literary figures as Maxim Gorky, Ivan Bunin, Leo Tolstoy, Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The book also contains Chekhov’s love correspondence with his wife Olga Knipper, with whom he lived in marriage for only three years, and then the death of the writer separated them.
