MOSCOW. The Central House of Artists invites you to get acquainted with the work of the artist Joseph Ostrovsky. For many years his name was better known abroad than at home. Exhibitions of his works were held in the largest cities of Europe, in New York and Tel Aviv, it was appreciated in Japan, but in Russia and in his native Ukrainian land his works have received recognition relatively recently.

However, many Odessa art lovers considered Joseph Meerovich one of the most striking and original artists. The same opinion was expressed by a teacher of painting at the Odessa Art College, a talented artist Dina Furmina, from whom Joseph Ostrovsky studied, starting at the age of 15.

The early works of the young artist were quite traditional - portraits, landscapes. Joseph Ostrovsky was a real workaholic - he worked hard and fruitfully, looking for his unique style in painting.

His landscapes, painted in the 70s, represent a poetic and philosophical picture of nature. Most of these works are winter landscapes filled with a sense of admiration for the beauty of winter nature. At the same time, a Jewish theme appeared in the artist’s work.

The heroes of his paintings are the people who surrounded Joseph Meerovich in the place near Odessa where he was born, the characters who seemed to have descended from the pages of Sholom Aleichem’s stories - sages, artisans, musicians. Several hundred of these works made up the amazing Jewish cycle. The heroes of his paintings live in a certain conditional space, looking at the viewer from its depths.

The artist participated in many exhibitions. In 1978, the first personal exhibition of Joseph Ostrovsky was successfully held in Odessa. The master spent the last years of his life in Israel, where he went for treatment.
