To his left (viewers right), one of the thieves appears to be struggling and reaching upwards. To Jesus right (viewers left), the other thief shows a more resigned posture. Below the cross, several figures are gathered. On the left, a man on horseback, dressed in a red cloak, holds a lance. Soldiers in armor are also present, some on horseback, some on foot.
On the right side of the composition, beneath the cross, a group of women, including Mary, Jesus mother, and Mary Magdalene, are depicted in mourning. One woman in a red robe embraces another woman in a dark cloak, both with expressions of grief. A blonde-haired woman reaches out towards the central cross.
The overall mood of the painting is dramatic and emotional, with a strong emphasis on the suffering of Christ and the sorrow of those around him. The dynamic composition, rich colors, and realistic depiction of human forms are characteristic of Baroque art.
The subtexts of the painting include the theological themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the dichotomy between good and evil, represented by the central figure of Christ and the two thieves. The presence of soldiers and the dramatic sky suggest the earthly and cosmic significance of the event. The grieving figures below highlight the human element of sorrow and faith in the face of death. The painting serves as a powerful visual representation of a pivotal moment in Christian narrative.
