Painter: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
Among those who painted in the technique of realism, who espoused the high ideals of classicism, it was considered not the best tone to depict the world in all its filth. The fact that there was dirt in it was a well-known fact and did not need to be depicted. The most sublime and ideal moments, worthy of being conveyed to posterity, were tried to be captured. The more surprising choice is Caravaggio’s portrayal of a servant boy peeling rotten fruit.
Description of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio’s The Boy Who Cleans the Fruit
Among those who painted in the technique of realism, who espoused the high ideals of classicism, it was considered not the best tone to depict the world in all its filth. The fact that there was dirt in it was a well-known fact and did not need to be depicted. The most sublime and ideal moments, worthy of being conveyed to posterity, were tried to be captured.
The more surprising choice is Caravaggio’s portrayal of a servant boy peeling rotten fruit. The boy wears a white shirt and is depicted in very soft, flowing lines. His chest is hairless, his face quite young - his hands are rough; he could not have been a violinist. His hair is slightly curly, and his skin has a hint of honey and bronze. There are peaches on the table in front of the boy. Two of them are beautiful, full, full of sunshine.
The others don’t look so perfect-they are shriveled and blackened, they must have been lying too long or picked from under the tree, already after the general harvest. Holding a knife in his hand, the boy peels the rot from them, and does it so deftly that beautiful spiral rings of peel are produced.
He is no stranger to this work, but for now it requires his full concentration. The boy looks at his hands, watching the movement of the knife, and looks completely absorbed in his work.
What goes on in his head is hard to say.
Maybe he imagines a beautiful princess hidden in a tower by a terrible dragon, which he, a mighty knight, can defeat. Maybe he’s thinking about making a pie out of those peaches today and he can have a piece, or jam, and she can have a little taste of it before they hide it in the jars. Or maybe he’s not thinking about anything at all, just enjoying the warm day and the usual quiet activity.
Against the dark background, his skin almost glows.

Perhaps it’s a painting of a woman in a white shirt with fruit on a table and a basket of fruit in front of her.
