The artist has employed a linear perspective that draws the viewer’s eye towards the central figure, reinforcing his importance within the scene. The arrangement of the figures is not random; they are grouped in clusters, each reacting differently to the unfolding situation. Some lean forward, seemingly engaged in conversation or argument, while others recoil as if anticipating an unpleasant revelation.
Above the table, two cherubic figures hold banners inscribed with Latin phrases. One banner reads PANEM, and the other ANGELORVM MANDAVIT HOMO. These inscriptions introduce a layer of theological complexity, hinting at divine instruction and the act of humanity consuming something ordained from above. The architectural backdrop, featuring a classical building, provides a sense of stability and order against the turmoil displayed by the figures below.
The lighting is dramatic, with strong contrasts between light and shadow that accentuate the emotional intensity of the moment. Light falls primarily on the central figure and those closest to him, while other areas remain in relative darkness, contributing to an atmosphere of foreboding. The use of color is restrained, focusing on earthy tones – browns, ochres, and reds – which further enhance the solemnity of the occasion.
The presence of food on the table – bread and what appears to be meat – is significant. It serves as a visual reminder of shared sustenance and community, but also foreshadows the symbolic act that will soon follow. The overall effect is one of profound emotional depth and spiritual significance, suggesting a pivotal moment in history with far-reaching implications.
