Painter: Peter Paul Rubens
One of the certainly striking masterpieces that is still relevant today is, of course, the work of one of the greatest artists, Peter Paul Rubens, a painter-painter originally from Holland, Perseus and Andromeda. Indeed, it doesn’t even take long to gaze into this painting as you immediately sense the deep dynamics of this story, which takes its origins from the ancient myths of Greece. The stories of the Greek gods, the great exploits of the heroes and so on, have captivated Rubens’ attention all his life, a consequence of which we can observe such beautiful masterpieces. However, it must be said that Rubens interpreted each story and myth in his own way.
Description of Peter Rubens’ painting Perseus and Andromeda
As, for example, in this picture we see how the heroic human qualities overcome the dark forces. Naturally in the center of the picture stands the main character, Perseus, in a life-affirming way.
Above him hovers the goddess of Glory, as should be the case with all valiant heroes. A rather reverent moment is the gentle touch of Perseus to Andromeda, the picture at that moment seems to come alive, and you become an involuntary witness to it all.
Quite interesting is the fact that Rubens depicted Andromeda, oddly enough, not as a perfect beauty of ancient times, but as a girl with rather pudgy forms and red hair. Almost everything in this picture just screams and praises, strength, health, power and beauty. Take, for example, the mighty pegasus horse, which seems not yet panted after the battle and greedily gulps and exhales air.
In this work one cannot help but marvel at the flawless, perfect and masterful play with the blues, reds and oranges. The craftsmanship in the painting of the nude body, is beyond praise.
The human body has such realistic coloring that with the right lighting, all the characters in the painting come to life and are set in motion in an instant.

PERSEUS SHIELD
Danger is invisible to you,
Can you reflect the danger?
... Only faith guides the pilgrim,
Moving with humility towards the sacred places.
Perseus shield – its bright gleam!
The gaze of Medusa will drown within itself.
A person constantly accumulates experience,
Often not even knowing why.
Perseus shield is a myth. But the principle is strong.
Use it, reflecting danger,
And strengthen your peripheral vision
With reliable training.
... The pilgrims above – on business -
Are concerned with the mundane. This is obvious.
We live – are we pleasing to the heavens?
But we live, even though our actions are shameful.
You will not be able to look directly at danger
– You will barely have enough strength.
If you could obtain a code of unseen heights,
Something that your heart desires.
... It is known that young men
Can cut down an old man for money.
That people are imprisoned unjustly –
Doesnt tickle the nerves – its painfully bland.
Sowing evil, we reap evil.
So what does Perseus shield reflect?
Before warmth appears,
The idea of warmth must shine.
Before life itself appeared,
The word of life was a secret of God.
Alas, there is a path that leads to madness,
A road leading into darkness.
Mold and rot will not erase the light.
Indirectly – does not mean unreal.
From the fact that the plot is distorted,
And life is now a sum of terrible traits,
It follows that evil is very banal,
But it does not follow that life is nonexistent,
Pure, clear, without dark flaws.
Although for thousands of years,
The human path has been extremely uneven.

The painting depicts the mythological hero Perseus rescuing Andromeda from a sea monster. Perseus, a muscular warrior in gleaming armor and a red cape, stands prominently in the center, holding a shield that reflects the severed head of Medusa. His gaze is directed towards Andromeda, a pale and vulnerable nude woman who stands to his left, partially veiled by drapery and surrounded by cherubic figures.
Andromeda appears to be recoiling slightly, her hand held by Perseus as if in a gesture of rescue or perhaps apprehension. She is depicted with soft, feminine curves, contrasting with Perseuss powerful physique. Several putti, or cherubic children, are scattered throughout the scene. Some cling to Perseuss armor and the winged horse Pegasus, while others surround Andromeda, adding to the dynamic and crowded composition.
The monstrous sea creature, likely the Cetus, lies defeated at the bottom of the painting, its gaping maw and reptilian form visible amongst rocky debris, signifying its vanquished state. Behind Perseus and Andromeda, flying figures, perhaps deities or nymphs, are shown descending. One holds a laurel wreath, symbolizing victory, while another carries a helmet, further underscoring the themes of heroism and triumph.
Pegasus, the magnificent winged horse, is a significant element, positioned to the right of Perseus. Its powerful build and outstretched wings convey a sense of divine aid and the extraordinary nature of the rescue. The horses hindquarters are a notable feature, with large patches of reddish-brown fur.
The overall atmosphere is one of drama and divine intervention. The lighting is theatrical, with strong contrasts between light and shadow, highlighting the key figures and creating a sense of movement and energy. The colors are rich and vibrant, typical of the Baroque style.
