You cannot comment Why?
The battle rages on in the middle ground, with soldiers on foot and horseback clashing. Smoke billows across the scene, obscuring some of the action and adding to the sense of disarray. Flags in various colors wave amidst the fighting. The ground is littered with fallen soldiers, emphasizing the brutal reality of the conflict.
The subtext of the painting likely revolves around the horrors and futility of war. Vereshchagin was known for his realistic and often unflinching portrayals of military campaigns, particularly the Russo-Turkish and Russo-Afghan wars. The title Surprise might allude to the suddenness and unexpected nature of the attack, or perhaps the shock and terror experienced by the soldiers in the face of such violence. The stark depiction of casualties suggests a commentary on the human cost of war, highlighting the suffering endured by those involved, regardless of which side they were on. The vast, indifferent mountains in the background could symbolize the larger forces at play in conflicts, or the isolation and desolation felt by the individuals caught in the midst of battle.
