March 25 at the museum-reserve "Ostafyevo" - "Russian Parnassus" opens the exhibition "Notebook" Nikolai Danilevsky and Natalia Khodyacheva. The basis of the exposition is the works of Nikolai Danilevsky from the projects "From a Clean Slate" and "Nostalgia", made in the form of an open book. The exhibition will also feature fragments of the Noble Nest cycle by Natalia Khodyacheva, where the author rethinks the heritage of the Silver Age masters.
The exposition includes paintings and graphic works by masters from St. Petersburg, as well as items from the authors’ home archives. All parts of the project are interconnected by one idea - to show the passage of time through the "banal" objects that surround us every day and every minute. This is a "Funny Legacy" - books, postcards, old black-and-white photographs, buttons, a box and other little things that keep the warmth of the hands of the artists’ distant ancestors and serve as a kind of key to understanding the exhibition.
At the exhibition, like a notebook, a new page opens. Nikolai Danilevsky refers to the work of A. S. Pushkin "Imitation of the Koran", written by the poet in 1824. Reflection of the descendant-artist on the literary monument of the ancestor will be presented by a new painting by Nikolai Danilevsky.
The project of the St. Petersburg masters "Notebook" is saturated with warm irony in the spirit of Hoffmann’s works, which is characteristic of representatives of fantastic realism.
***Nikolai Danilevsky is a direct descendant of the great Russian poet through his eldest son Alexander Alexandrovich Pushkin (1833-1914). Natalya Khodyacheva is a representative of the noble family of the Pustoshkins, a descendant of the famous dramatic actor Ivan Petrovich Pustoshkin (1795-1842). In 1817-20, I.P. Pustoshkin (stage name Boretsky) met with A.S. Pushkin at Prince A.A. Shakhovsky, which was mentioned by Pushkin in My Notes on the Russian Theater.
Art historian M. Yu. German writes about the works of Nikolai Danilevsky as follows: “It may seem that the artist Nikolai Danilevsky belongs to a non-objective tradition. This is not entirely true; rather, he paints the ghosts of things, the phantoms of what he has seen, and he does it with excellent taste and great pictorial culture, finely processing the pictorial surface. Exactly what a hundred years ago was called “the buzz of the canvas”, the eloquence of the paint layer is the most important advantage of the master along with the attractive encryption of motives, the system of subtle plastic allusions.”
In turn, highly appreciating the creative searches of Natalia Khodyacheva, M. Yu. German notes the specific reflection of the Noble Nest project: look at your forgotten secrets.”
