Neighborhood - the area adjacent to something. The simplest and most obvious, literal and landscape-oriented interpretation of the exhibition, however, creates the first layer of perception. Four series of works, like the four components of the cross, converge at one point or, like the cardinal points, diverge from the compass point and set both centripetal and centrifugal dynamics. The author and the surrounding space, the material and the works themselves, the image of the world around - these are the provisions of the necessary conditions for understanding that the exhibition "Neighborhood" Vitaly Kopachev offers even the most inexperienced viewer.
However, the neighborhood has not only planar characteristics. A neighborhood is a surrounding space, as in mathematics a neighborhood of a point: an arbitrary set containing an open ball centered at a given point. And such an understanding already deduces from only horizontal and two-dimensional perception, adding a vertical, and therefore its characteristics such as height and depth. Interpretations of the vertical, connected with the spiritual high and bodily low principles of the human being, allow us to talk about the soul, as such, about its properties and contradictions, but the main thing is not just about its presence, but about the unchanging and fruitful work in the perception of the author’s works. And this work becomes apparent in any element of each of these works and in the totality of such elements, up to expositional generalizations.
Here, interpretations of the vertical as a time axis become significant. The neighborhood consists of two infinite intervals: “minus infinity” and “plus infinity”, as well as the element itself infinity. The connection between the past and the future through the moment of the present can be traced not only and not so much in the direct dating of the creation of a series of works, but, even more so, in obvious changes in technology from series to series and in veiled compositional changes. Only the author and infinity remain constants.
The viewer, being like a different point and having his own neighborhood, is free to perceive Vitaliy Kopachev’s paintings in his coordinate system, since the author’s works allow this to happen. The exhibition claims that different worlds must exist and can intersect, but the completeness of the composition indicates that the infinities themselves no longer fall into these surroundings.
