And at the same time, the painter was constantly in creative search, trying to find the most expressive artistic means. It was these continuous attempts to achieve perfection that became the reasons why Rembrandt van Rijn is the greatest artist today. Figures of fine arts are still equal to his unsurpassed skill, and the painter’s canvases fascinate at first sight.

Jan Vermeer, on the other hand, left behind a very small number of works, but this did not prevent him from becoming one of the greatest masters of painting in Holland in the 17th century. The themes for most of his works he took from everyday life: a young woman, absorbed in reading a letter in a sunlit room; a girl in a red hat with an expectant expression on her face; the tiled roofs and church spiers of Delft under the endless sky.

Most of Vermeer’s works are compositions in a carefully crafted interior, with a small number of figures. There are also several cityscapes. There are practically no religious subjects.

According to some contemporary authors, Vermeer and a number of other Renaissance artists used technical means: camera obscura, camera lucida and spherical mirrors to achieve perfection in creating the effect of perspective and lighting. These theories are considered hypothetical and criticized both by artists and scientists.

The exposition of the exhibition includes 78 paintings by artists, covering different stages of their career. The works are accompanied by a description of the plots and the history of the creation of each painting. Also, for convenience, the exhibition is accompanied by an audio guide.
