September 12 at 16.00 in the main building of the Irkutsk Art Museum. AT. P. Sukachev (5 Lenin St.) opens the exhibition of Israeli artists Ella Byshevskaya and Mikhail Yakhilevich "See the word." On display are copyright illustrations for a new edition of the Torah, released by the Moscow synagogue at Chistye Prudy community at Alpina Publisher.
The text of the Torah has always worried artists. It is difficult to illustrate it. In the Torah there are almost no descriptions of the landscape, the appearance of the heroes, the color of objects. It would seem that the artist has nothing to “rely on”. However, looking at the illustrations by Ella Byshevskaya and Mikhail Yakhilevich, we are convinced that stingy with epithets, a concise and strict text gives an amazing scope for interpretation. Byshevskaya and Yakhilevich live in Israel - on the land into which the characters of the Book sought to enter. They draw the "Place of Action" from nature, and not "by imagination", while trying to preserve the conventions characteristic of Jewish art, the artists try, on the one hand, to feel the text emotionally and vividly, and on the other, to comprehend it through classical Jewish comments. Therefore, both text and commentary are often illustrated. And, as in the comments, the drawings attempt to combine humor and tragedy, pathos and irony.
The exhibition "See the Word" and the presentation of the book will be held on September 12 at 16.00 in the main building of the Irkutsk Art Museum (Lenin St., 5) and will run until September 22. The event will also include a creative meeting with the artist Mikhail Yakhilevich and the author’s tour of the exhibition. Entrance to the opening is free.
