From June 29 to September 12, 2016 in the “V. Bronstein Gallery” will be a personal exhibition of contemporary artist from Yakutia Mikhail Starostin “Summer of Snow”. The project is unique: the painting and graphics of the famous author, more than 40 works in total, will be presented for the first time in the capital of Eastern Siberia.
It is worth noting that the painting of Yakutia is a relatively young phenomenon, but permeated with traditions and culture of the northern peoples. Ethnic color is present on the canvases of both novice masters and in the works of recognized masters. Among the latter are Mikhail Starostin, the most sought-after and famous artist of Yakutia. After graduating from the Department of Industrial Graphics of the Krasnoyarsk State Art Institute, Mikhail Gavrilievich devoted many years to the work of the art editor of the National Book Publishing House. Hence the recognizable handwriting of the master in graphics, painting and design. The artist admits that his work is not subject to calculation. The author’s work is represented not only in museums and galleries in Russia, but also in many foreign countries, for example, in private collections in the USA, Canada, France, England, China, etc. The artist’s last personal exhibition was held in April 2016, in the Moscow gallery Zart.
The main characters of the master’s paintings are the people of the North. Walking, sailing in boats, riding horses and bulls - the features of the author himself are guessed in all faces. It is true that the artist writes what is best known to him. Mikhail Starostin explains: “How do I collect material for my work? This is, first of all, literature on ethnography. To be honest, in the North, I, in fact, have not been. If we talk about the details that I use in my work, I can say so. My grandfather was a hunter and, like any hunter, he had scribbled ones or take, for example, such clothes as kitchenettes that many northern peoples have - these are our same Alaskan down jackets. And all this is in my paintings. "
