In the Perm Art Gallery, the exhibition "The Word of Gorky" opens, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the writer. This exhibition is an attempt to tell about the personality of A. M. Gorky, to give the audience the opportunity to touch the art of the twentieth century and the fate of one of its creators.
A. M. Gorky (1868-1936) —– writer, playwright and public figure, one of the key and most complex figures of the Silver Age and Soviet literature.
He was an interlocutor of many famous contemporaries: a pupil and opponent of L.N. Tolstoy, a friend of A.P. Chekhov, a friend-opponent of V.I. Lenin. He inherits the writer and human rights activist V. G. Korolenko, enters into a spiritual dialogue with the expressionist writer L. Andreev, and "initiates" socialist realism.
In himself, his personality reflected the cultural diversity of the turn of the century, the greatness and tragedy of the Russian revolution, the enthusiasm and despair of the first Soviet decades. A rebel, maximalist and revolutionary, he created a new faith - the religion of man.
A universal acquaintance and a lonely Nietzschean, peering into the abyss, Gorky conducted complex dialogues that dealt with the most essential issues of his rebellious era.
The exhibition is based on works from various collections of the Perm Gallery: paintings, drawings, sculptures, arts and crafts, posters, collected in the 1920-1970s. The collection allows you to present many interesting and rare exhibits.
For example, the intravital portraits of Gorky in the 1930s, when the iconography of the writer took shape, reveal different facets of that era and the personality of A. M. Gorky himself.
The portrait of A. M. Gorky N. I. Niss-Goldman (1937) is one of a kind, it will be shown to the Perm audience for the first time. The portrait was created for the Soviet pavilion of the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and entered the Perm Gallery from Paris after completion of the exhibition.
Permians will be interested to know that one of the first illustrators of Gorky’s works in Soviet times was our fellow countryman, a native of Kungur, artist-architect I.V. Simakov, who then lived in Petrograd. The artist’s legacy, including illustrations for the writer’s early stories, fell into the Perm collection in 1928 and marked the beginning of the collection of the Gorky theme. A valuable acquisition was due to the efforts of the then director of the gallery N. N. Serebrennikov.
For the first time in such a volume and composition works of artists Kukryniksy will be shown: illustrations for the novel "Mother" will be adjacent to the impromptu friendly cartoons by A. M. Gorky, V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko, S. Ya. Marshak.
Lovers of graphic art expect black and white woodcuts of the Moscow graphic art of the sixties V. A. Noskov to Gorky’s early romantic works. Sunny picturesque landscape of the artist VN Yakovlev "Sorrento", watercolors by F. S. Bogorodsky tell of the long years of emigration of the writer. The exhibition provides an opportunity to see and reflect.
