What kind of young masters of “brush and chisel” are they — painters, sculptors, graphic artists, stage designers, architects — heirs of great artists of the past, creative successors to the brilliant galaxy of masters of the Russian art school? What kind of authors are they, for whom the era of the “Silver Age”, French impressionism and post-impressionism, Russian avant-garde of the early twentieth century - is history already? What excites them, what does the heart respond to, what is beauty and perfection for them, what depths of the universe are subject to their creative comprehension? How does the modern world respond in their receptive and vulnerable souls, what new things have they discovered in the field of plastic, color, shape, what imaginative and spatial solutions do their imagination give rise to? Many of these questions are answered by the exhibition, which opens in the halls of the Art Gallery on Prechistenka, 19.
The exposition will comprise about 200 works of all kinds and genres of fine art. Performed in various and numerous techniques of graphics, painting, sculpture, monumental art, they demonstrate the great skill of the authors and the highest level of academic art school, which remains unsurpassed in the training of professionals in the visual arts.
The exhibition acquaints the viewer with new names, and perhaps some are already known to him, because many of the authors of the presented works are active participants in modern artistic life.
Creative workshops of the Russian Academy of Arts are a unique, unparalleled phenomenon, an important link and the highest level of a three-level system of academic art education. They were organized in 1947. The origins of their creation were the largest Russian artists of the mid-twentieth century. Over time, they were opened in many Russian regional centers. Modern creative workshops are a special page in the development of Russian art, the value of Russian culture is a kind of postgraduate study, where the most gifted young artists who have already studied first in secondary and then in higher art educational institutions enter to further improve their professionalism. They have a unique opportunity for three years of internship to work in constant creative contact with prominent Russian masters of fine art, academics of the Russian Academy of Arts - heads of workshops, to take in the rich experience of the older generation. At present, the Moscow workshop of easel painting is headed by A.P. Tkachev, monumental painting by E.N. Maksimov, the head of the sculpture workshop is A.V. Tsigal, the graphics are by A.D. Shmarinov, and the theater and decoration art workshop is led by B. A. Messerer, architecture - V.N. Rzhevsky. An internship in creative workshops sets an unlimited range of experiments to research and introduce innovative techniques and technologies into the modern art and educational process.

A personal example, direct creative communication with the Master, direct succession of traditions today, as throughout the history of art, remains the basis of art education. Not only basic craft skills, but deep motivation and meanings, purely professional tasks and the intricacies of the craft become the subject of comprehension at the internship stage in creative workshops. And just as in the Renaissance bottega, where virtuosos, geniuses and apprentices worked side by side, young men matured and became wise in communication with great personalities, inept craftsmen became Creators, so in modern creative workshops, under the influence of the Master’s personality, young talents “mature”. The master seeks in each of the young authors to see and develop the features of their artistic style, which is very important for revealing a creative personality. And therefore it is so rich in a variety of genres, themes, artistic techniques, the technique that the exhibition offers to the attention of the viewer.

Historical canvases, portraits, still lifes, landscapes will form the basis of its picturesque section. They are solved by young artists in the forms of traditional full-scale painting, the author’s and spectator’s interest in which does not wane, and in modern stylistics with its typical conventions, plastic generalizations, figurative and spatial associativity. Panel by E. Tokareva, the monumental works of D. Chepik, included in the section of monumental painting, are noteworthy. The exposition introduces samples of temple murals - an integral and important part of modern art practice.
The graphic section is traditionally fascinatingly diverse: color and monochrome lithography, etching, silk-screen printing, works in the art of watercolor, pastel, pencil drawing, charcoal drawing. Young masters turn to the artistic comprehension of history, modern life, illustrate the works of Russian and world literature. The special “music” of etchings by M. Smolyaninova, the virtuoso ease of illustrations by A. Polotnova, the philosophical depths of a series of easel drawings by I. Orzhekhovsky constitute a powerful and complex semantic and pictorial “chord” of the exposition.

The section of sculpture is unusually expressive. Both in the portrait and in the thematic compositions, contemporary plastic is emphasized architectonically, free to generalize and transform the form, which is dictated by the search for the most accurate expression of design. It is in this plane that the creative searches of O. Kolosova, Z. Rzayev and many other authors lie.
Original, often unexpected, artistic solutions are offered by young masters of scenography. Under the guidance of the famous Boris Messerer, the head of the theater and decorative art workshop, the trainees developed sketches of sets, costumes and mock-ups for performances, some of which have already been put on stage.
The exposition offered to the attention of the viewer is a whole layer of modern art life. With their creativity, young authors determine the main trends in the development of Russian art. Their giftedness, skill are embodied in wonderful works that will cause undoubted spectator interest and attention of professionals. An exhibition in the Art Gallery is a rare chance to look into closed creative laboratories and learn about the results of the mysterious process of the origin of great skill.
The exhibition runs until April 10, 2016.
