The new project of Pavel Polyansky includes 10 canvases, while in some of them, in addition to the "branded" gray color of the artist, radical colors characteristic of anime, cartoons and comics burst. The direct meaning of the word war is not present on the presented canvases. So what is this exhibition about. Let us turn to the statement of the author of the project: “The concept of war in the name of the exhibition is rather arbitrary. This word is intended to emphasize the difference in gender, age, social status, the difference in habitat, for example, a village, a city, the Arctic. My war implies a struggle of contradictions, a conflict of different areas, which, touching each other, spark, creating our unique, imperfect, and sometimes comical being.
The duality of the world, which is the interaction of the two polarities behind the created universe, creates millions of different situations and events that affect each other, which inspired me to create a series of story paintings. The form of the image, referring to the comic book, is designed to mix the difference of cultures, heroes and worlds. The alien forms of culture, religion and morality that have arisen before us, like Martians, often amusingly lie on our reality, acquiring amazing forms. And other worlds that exist simultaneously with ours conceal puzzles, mystery, and maybe danger. We’ll drill a new well somewhere in the wrong direction. ”
So, the duality of the world, expressed in a combination of opposites, responsible for the diversity of the world, is dedicated to this project. Accordingly, each work consists of two parts, which quite rightly can be designated as yin and yang. One, picturesque, as it were represents a picture of the real world - yin. Another, made in a contour drawing or as a frame of an animated film, is a story or an imaginary copy of some other, attractive, world or situation - Jan. This technique corresponds to the comic book genre, which is characterized by three elements - a hero, travel, science fiction. Each picture is a separate story, but they can be combined into a single narrative. The scene (yin) is rural, events with heroes occur either in the garden near the beds, or on the banks of the river or on the road through fields and groves. However, the world of fantasies, dreams, dreams of heroes - yang is completely opposite to reality - yin is only in children. They see themselves as heroes of cartoons and computer games (Road home, War of the worlds) or a mermaid in the underwater world (Underwater). Yang of adult heroes usually partially or completely carries elements of a familiar reality. So a funny, absurd and comical mixture of objects of different cultures, religions and everyday life is formed. A girl near cabbage beds and weeds froze in a yoga pose (Earth - air), and in the sky she sees pagodas and symbols of royal power - lions. Another yogi on the river bank represents a pagoda on it, and on a growing burdock - sakura flowers (Multiculture). However, the imaginary world of heroes may consist entirely of yin elements. So, a naked girl, sunbathing near a greenhouse to the music of an iPhone, even in dreams does not leave her village, and only the bee she is afraid of seems to be an unrealistic huge monster (Equal tan). A girl who has fallen asleep on a sultry day makes a trip to the Arctic, but among her ice, snow and icebergs, she does not notice drilling rigs and other equipment, while at the same time a man busy in the backyard with watering dreams of drinking - we see a glass in a bubble from his head )Brands).
Pavel Polyansky’s new works written in the comic book genre are, as always, aesthetically impeccable, and thanks to the irony and humor of the project, despite the seriousness of the concept, I would like to call it “Merry Yin and Yang of Pavel Polyansky”.
