“Youth“ uniforms ”of Moscow” is a story about the lifestyle and visual aesthetics of Moscow subcultures of the 1980-1990s. The exposition contains vivid signs of the youth’s appearance during the sunset of the Soviet era and the beginning of the new Russia: from bikers, Beatles and rockers to punks, metallers, Goths and Rastamans. Modern artists, reinterpreting the experience of the past, offer possible modern youth uniforms to the audience. You can see the exhibition from June 21 to August 20 in the halls of the Museum of Moscow.
“For the Museum of Moscow it is important to speak different languages about the city. At this exhibition, we look at the recent history of Moscow through the prism of youth fashion and visual culture, and then we will throw a bridge in our present day and present-day Moscow. For some, the exhibition will become nostalgic, for someone informative, and will make you think about changes and the connection of generations, ”says Alina Saprykina, director of the Museum of Moscow.
Subcultures are characteristic of the urban environment. In Western society, their heyday occurred during the youth protests of 1968, and gradually from the phenomena of countercultural and isolated they turned into an integral part of society. The boom of subcultures in the USSR happened in the era of perestroika. In Russian subcultures, as well as throughout the world, external expressiveness and singularity have become an important part of the worldview. Great importance was attached to musical addictions and visual codes, “uniforms” - clothes, hair, accessories, makeup, which easily determined the belonging to a particular group.
Today, fashion uses numerous style elements of youth groups of the past, and it is difficult to identify a person’s social status by costume - almost any person can wear a bracelet with spikes or a bright hair color. With the advent of social networks and limitless virtual communication, the visible signs of belonging to a particular group completely lose their position.
The exhibition consists of two self-sufficient, but complementary parts. The historical part is the photo documentation of the youth movements of the 1980-1990s from the world famous master Igor Gavrilov, winner of the Word Press Photo award. During these years he worked as a photojournalist for Ogonyok and the American Time. His pictures preserved a variety of “uniforms” of youth subcultures and signs of the times.
The second part of the exhibition is modern. “The idea of the exhibition is to get away from a situation where popular culture plays in the artificial rebellion of past generations, and to show how contemporary artists return the imagery and beauty of urban youth clothing,” said curators of the exhibition Evgenia Kikodze and Irina Chmyreva.
17 installations and objects that reveal the topic of new youth “uniforms” will be presented by: Olga Bozhko, Sergey Bratkov, Dasha Bulatova, EliKuka group, Anastasia Kizilova, Petr Kiryusha, Ship group, Irina Korina, Krovostok Group, Konstantin Larin, MishMash group, Ivan Murzin, Icing Architects Group, Oleg Ustinov, Dmitry Tsvetkov, Svetlana Shuvaeva.
As part of the public program of the exhibition, on July 5 at 19:00 a master class “Uniform of the Citizen” by artist Anastasia Kizilova will be held. Using her experience in fashion design and contemporary art, the artist will help to find among the unnecessary things that are usually sent to the garbage, materials for creating textiles, accessories and artistic expressions.
