About Julia Mamontova:
Julia Mamontova, a new name in Russian contemporary art, became the “Artist of the Year” at the 2019 Art & Business Awards. She was born in the Komi Republic and graduated from Moscow State Art Institute named after V.I. Surikova, currently lives and works in different countries: Russia, Greece, USA (Los Angeles). Julia perfected her skills at St. Martin’s Central College of Art and Design in London and long ago found her niche in the visual arts - encaustic.
Encaustic paints were popular in Roman, Byzantine, Egyptian art. This technique and the materials used provide the work with durability and color fastness, for example, the famous Fayum portraits of the 1st-3rd centuries are still preserved. Today, few artists are engaged in professional painting with hot wax and pigments, since simpler, cheaper techniques have appeared, and amateur paintings created by irons with wax crayons are often given out for encaustic. But Julia seeks to rectify the situation, revive the ancient art technique in Russia, taking into account all the subtleties, and again make it relevant.
Julia Mamontova is the pseudonym of the artist Julia Zabrodina, which was not taken by chance. She received it from the famous merchant Vasily Timofeevich Mamontov - great-grandfather of Julia through her father. In the XVIII-XIX centuries, he was engaged in the trade and delivery of goods from England to Arkhangelsk and the Urals along the Mezen River. Inspired by the story of her family, Julia took her last name for a pseudonym.
