The restorer of Russian iconography plays the role of an artist, comprehending the lost and ruined works of ancient Russian art, and creates works at the turn of the times.
The Lignum series, which gave the name to the exhibition, are wooden objects inspired by the damaged monuments of the wooden church architecture of the Russian north. To create them, the author used boards from an old village fence, metal, firing technique and aerosol. Accompanying the series are boards collected by the artist from old icons, on which only hints of past images remain. They are presented as they were found, without any intrusion. The view of the artist is combined with the view of the restorer, who often deals with the works of anonymous masters, offering viewers to look at religious art from a different angle, perhaps unknown to them before.
Maxim Demin works in various media: painting, photography, installation and video art. The artist’s works are in private collections in Russia and abroad. Since 2015 he has been a member of the Creative Union of Artists of Russia. Works at the Central Museum of Old Russian Art and Culture. Andrey Rublev, is a senior lecturer at the Department of Painting at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute. V. Surikov.
For the author, the project is an attempt to enter into a dialogue with the tradition and history of religious art, not copying, but comprehending in the context of modernity. The exhibition will open with a vernissage in the presence of the artist on February 10 and will run daily with free admission. Curator - Marina Gurevich.
