From June 13 to 23, Liza Storm’s interactive exhibition “Family Values” together with the Retrolooks project will be presented in the Nest workshop. In the art space of an old apartment in the center of Moscow, guests will be able to discover the secrets of the origin of Jewish surnames, hear the stories of different families associated with them, get acquainted with things from the everyday life of the twentieth century, brought from Europe, America and different parts of Russia.
The art space of the Nest workshop through mystification will turn into a memorial apartment for Sarah and Zinovy, who once lived here, and an old personal letter telling about family values will become an annotation for the exhibition. In the room next to collectibles of the past, more than 30 interactive objects are presented revealing the origin of Jewish surnames, and an audio installation created by Daria Kowalska based on her documentary about Jewish families whose stories are transmitted through their surnames is placed in the closet. In addition, the exhibition will feature an installation of retro clothing created in collaboration with artist and performer Marie Sokol and her project “Retrolooks”.
In the process of working on the exhibition, the artist Lisa Stormit studied a huge number of Jewish surnames, and the genealogy Vladimir Paley helped her select the most accurate and historically reliable materials. Lisa endowed the origin stories of various surnames with a material form so that visitors to the exhibition could touch them in a literal and figurative sense. As part of the project, “Nest” will also host lectures and master classes on the subject of the exhibition.
