On July 12, the Cosmorama XVIII exhibition opens at the Museum of Moscow. The exposition contains items from the 18th-19th centuries from the collections of the Museum of Moscow, works of contemporary artists, performances by actors and musicians.
The Cosmorama XVIII exhibition is a special mechanism of history vision developed by curator Sergei Khachaturov and stage designer Stepan Lukyanov. This is an optical illusion and a time machine that takes viewers to the past thanks to artifacts from the collections of the Museum of Moscow. Many of them are exhibited for the first time. At the exhibition, objects and art of the Age of Enlightenment and Romanticism enter into a conceptual dialogue with the audience.
The exposition is dedicated to the Governor-General of Moscow Mikhail Volkonsky and the writer, scientist, philosopher Vladimir Odoyevsky, in whose honor the exhibition is named after the work of the same name.
Artist Vladimir Kartashov reconstructs Moscow Square in the 1770s. The pavilions created by Kartashov resemble the amusing squares of squares of old cities. Famous artists of the Brusnikin Workshop Vasily Butkevich and Petr Skvortsov will read a joke poem by Andrey Rodionov.
Egor Koshelev, Leonid Tskhe and Philip Shane will present the utopian projects of Moscow of the 18th century. Their appearance and structure are inspired by the thoughts of Prince Odoevsky, called by his contemporaries “Russian Faust”. Stepan Lukyanov and the art group "North 7" are reconstructing the writer’s office. The cabinet exhibits artifacts of the past from the funds of the Museum of Moscow: unusual documents, optical mechanisms and objects of the 18th - first half of the 19th century. On the stage of the video theater created by the artists of the Gogol Center, the July Ensemble and the Brusnikin Workshop, viewers will see Odoevsky himself and his heroes. And the famous TV presenter Artyom Korolev specially for the exhibition will share recipes for the alchemical cuisine of Prince Odoevsky.
Alina Saprykina, Director of the Museum of Moscow: “The Museum of Moscow is pleased to present a project that will revive one of the important pages of Russian history and culture in museum halls. It is especially valuable for us that historical objects from the rich and unique collection of the Museum of Moscow are used in such an unusual immersive project. “I hope that our artifacts will help create an atmosphere of immersion in the fantastic world of the outstanding Muscovite Vladimir Odoevsky and in ancient Moscow, Mikhail Volkonsky.”
The project was created with the participation of the Historical Museum, the Museum of Architecture and private collectors.
Opening of the exhibition on July 11 at 19:00, admission is free.
The exhibition runs until August 25, 2019.
