The works of the artist and sculptor Erte will be shown at an exhibition in Moscow
On July 5, the Granatny Dvor exhibition space at the Patriarch’s Ponds will present the works of art deco legends such as Leo Bakst, Erte, Georges Barbier, Raul Dufy, Umberto Brunelleschi, Dimitri Chiparus. Exhibition “Art Deco Geniuses. Paris Fashion ”will work until August 15, 2018.
Just twenty years before the Second World War, the Art Deco style dominated the world. This is the time of “high style”, clean lines, expensive materials, impeccable taste. The Art Deco style, which replaced the Art Nouveau style, covered all areas of design: architecture, interior, clothing, cars, jewelry. It conveys a special mood and lifestyle that appeared in the West after the shock of the First World War and the Russian Revolution. The date of his birth is considered to be 1925, when a grand international exhibition of modern decorative arts and industrial products was held in Paris. On its basis, twelve volumes of the encyclopedia of new works of decorative art were published - the name "Art Deco" appeared there. The main relay of new ideas, especially in the field of fashion, were magazines and newspapers.
In this context, The Gazette du Bon Ton, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan magazines played a decisive role. Costumes and covers for magazines were created by leading artists of the time: Leo Bakst, Erte, Georges Barbier, Raul Dufy, Umberto Brunelleschi. Any elegant lady who was interested in fashion on both sides of the Atlantic was familiar with these names and believed in their unconditional taste.
The exhibition in the Pomegranate Court will feature more than 60 original color lithographs by Lev Bakst, Georges Barbier, Raoul Dufy, Pierre Brissot, Umberto Brunelleschi and other masters, as well as sculptures by Dimitri Chiparus from private Russian and European collections.
Viewers will have the opportunity to see the unique silk-screen printing and sculptures of Roman Tyrtov, who became famous throughout the world as Erte. An artist, graphic artist, illustrator, stage designer, fashion designer of the Art Deco era was born in St. Petersburg in 1892, but before the revolution he left Russia forever. He was engaged in illustration, sculpture, stage design, creating costumes and jewelry, designed the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. Anna Pavlova and Mata Hari performed in his outfits, Norma Shearer and Marion Davis dressed in dresses tailored to his designs.
