At the Vellum Gallery on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the legendary VKHUTEMAS (Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops), which was celebrated in 2020, from February 12 to March 1, 2021. the exhibition "VKHUTEMAS: Heritage" is held, consisting of the works of teachers and students of the renowned university.
The current exhibition season has turned out to be unusual due to pandemic restrictions; nevertheless, many state museums and private galleries celebrated the anniversary of this unique educational institution, which has become a real “forge” of avant-garde art cadres, and has spawned entire trends in art and education. The peculiarity of the Vellum gallery project is that there are many paintings and graphic works of both famous teachers and their, no less, in the future, famous students. Most of the works will be shown to the general public for the first time.
The most extensively presented is the work of Pyotr Konchalovsky (1876-1956), who taught at VKHUTEMAS-VKHUTEIN from 1926 to 1929. In total, the exposition contains more than fifteen works by Konchalovsky.
Ten works represent the work of Alexander Shevchenko (1883-1948), who taught at the faculty of painting from the moment the workshops were organized and almost until the very closure of the educational institution, which was renamed by that time into the All-Russian Institute of Art and Technology, until 1929.
Another teacher of the Faculty of Painting, Alexandru Exter (1882-1949), is represented by five graphic sheets. The works of Boris Smirnov-Rusetsky, Alexander Labas, Efrosinya Ermilova-Platova, Rostislav Barto, Ignatius Nivinsky and Robert Falk are shown.
“Many graduates of this main creative institute of the country, which was also called the“ forge of personnel of the Russian avant-garde, ”became outstanding painters, graphic artists, designers, sculptors, architects, ceramists, theater artists, textile workers, printers,” says Lyubov Agafonova, art director of Vellum… “And today their works, which have entered our gallery from private collections and have been carefully attributed by us, can be seen and even purchased by everyone.”
VKHUTEMAS existed for only ten years, but had a huge impact on the culture of both its time and future times, changing the foundations of art education and preparing universal artists. It has become a kind of matrix for the formation of a whole series of educational and research institutions in the field of art, design and artistic technology. From the faculties of the workshops in Moscow were born the Moscow Architectural Institute, Surikovka and Polygraph, and in Leningrad - the Repin Institute.
