The Russian Academy of Arts at 21 Prechistenka presents the anniversary exhibition of the works of the famous Moscow painter, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation, academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Dmitry Belyukin - “Time to collect stones…”, dedicated to the 55th anniversary of the master.
The exhibition features about 200 paintings, most of which have been created over the past 5 years, some of which will be shown for the first time.
The creative range of one of the most successful contemporary painters, a staunch follower of the classical school of painting, Dmitry Belyukin is very wide: he works in almost all genres - historical paintings, portraits, landscapes, book illustrations. At this exhibition, viewers will see historical canvases, works of the “Holy Places of Orthodoxy” series, as well as numerous landscapes created based on the materials of the artist’s frequent trips both in Russia and Europe. In all likelihood, the triptych “Jerusalem. Dawn ”(2017),“ Panorama of the east coast of Athos with the Stavronikita monastery and cells ”(2016) and“ Early morning on the lake ”(2017), written in Valday, one of the painter’s favorite places.
“Time to collect stones…” - a biblical quote taken in the name of the exhibition portends the immersion of the viewer in the landscapes of the cities of the Holy Land, the Jordan River, the Sea of Galilee. Visitors to the exhibition will also walk along the paths of Mount Athos, which is inaccessible to many, the inheritance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and will visit the rare northern monasteries of Russia. But the name also has another, deeper meaning, laid down by the author. This is a delicate advice to start “collecting stones” in all areas of social and spiritual life. This applies to the whole country, and each family, and the individual. “You need to“ collect stones ”in your soul, inside yourself, sometimes stop and think about whether we are missing out on something more important in the daily bustle,” says the artist.
The landscapes of Dmitry Belyukin are not just a “picture of nature” of a medium or larger size, but a meaningful philosophical image, a picture-reflection. This is especially true for the series “Holy Places of Orthodoxy”. In the works of 2016-2017, the artist uses a large canvas format, but few know that the obligatory method of the master’s work on a large painting is a full-scale sketch, sometimes made in one to two hours. Full-scale works under the general title “Impressions of the Orthodox pilgrim”, which are of interest to connoisseurs of painting, will also be presented in the exhibition.
Despite the fact that Dmitry Belyukin is rightfully considered the pioneer of the White Guard theme in Russian art (his canvas “White Russia. Exodus.” (1992-1994) became a textbook), in order to stay on topic, the master deliberately shows only one work on the tragic events of a hundred years ago. This is a picture of "Shards" (1996). It depicts a peasant boy sitting next to the ruins of a noble estate, who is trying to lay a broken plate out of fragments. Painted over 20 years ago, this picture has not lost its relevance today.
Dmitry Belyukin is also one of the leading painters of the "Studio of military artists named after M. B. Grekov." In the created works on military and historical subjects, he manages to submit battle scenes in an unexpected, even lyrical perspective with individually found color. These are the work “The Death of the Imperial Guard”, “Morning of the Battle of Borodino” (War of 1812) and “The Last Feat of the Squadron” (Crimean War).
Each work is associated with certain memories that the artist is ready to share with the audience on the days of the exhibition, meetings are supposed to be held with visitors on weekends. For example, the landscape of “St. Panteleimon’s Monastery in the Morning” is associated with the rash decision of the artist, who first came to Mount Athos, to violate the Charter of the Holy Mountain and swim in the sea. There he was attacked by a huge octopus, our hero defeated him in half with sin, after which fresh “seafood” was served to the meal of the monks and pilgrims. All the following 7 trips to Mount Athos passed without violating the Charter.
In addition to harmony, light and beautiful painting, the exposition is characterized by a sense of joy and harmony.
The exhibition is open from November 15 to December 3.
