The exhibition includes 129 works of the most famous artists who have revolutionized art, determining their appearance and the main trends of modernism. These are Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Juan Miro and Vasily Kandinsky. Without them, there would be no Fauvism, Cubism, abstractionism, surrealism. They believed that art could change lives. Indeed, modernism escaped from gallery halls, influenced architecture, design, music, fashion, television - it became a whole era, not yet fully experienced. The real laboratory of modernism was painting and, especially, graphics. In the work of individual artists, whole trends and styles arose. And it is from the graphic works of these artists that an exhibition is formed.
The works were acquired abroad by a group of Krasnoyarsk investors for display in Russia and especially in Siberia. This gesture is hard to overestimate. The organization of an exhibition of paintings by these artists is still beyond the scope of the private Siberian initiative. Fortunately, all these artists worked with different types and techniques of art, they were engaged not only in painting, but also in graphics, in particular lithography. Sometimes lithographs repeated pictorial compositions, sometimes they were created as separate works, sometimes as book illustrations. For example, a series of illustrations by Chagall to Gogol’s “Dead Souls”, completed back in the 1920s. Lithographs have a certain circulation and therefore are more accessible. But at the same time, they are no less interesting, they retain the same style and imagery, they were made by the same hand. The technique of lithography made it possible to collect and display exhibitions.
For almost the entire twentieth century, Russia did not acquire, but only lost, works of art, they perished in troubles and wars, the Bolsheviks sold the treasures of the Hermitage for nothing, a separate struggle was waged with modern art. As a result, with the exception of Moscow and St. Petersburg, the country’s population saw classics of the twentieth century only in reproductions. This exhibition fills this gap, provides a rare opportunity to see the work of legendary artists - the founders of twentieth-century art.
The chronology of the presented works covers a significant part of the twentieth century from the beginning of the 10s to the 70s, when the authors were still alive and continued to work. The exhibition gives a whole range of style searches, includes figurative and abstract works.
The exhibition has both artistic and educational significance. She represents those basic artistic values of the modern era that are now studied in schools and universities around the world.
