The Moscow State United Museum-Reserve “Kolomenskoye - Izmailovo” presents the exhibition “Visiting the Larins. The world of a Russian estate at the beginning of the 19th century.” The exhibition will open in the Tver Regional Art Gallery and will present a new perspective on the topic of estate culture. The project takes place as part of the celebration of the 225th anniversary of the birth of the great poet Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin.
Thanks to the apt expression of Vissarion Belinsky, the novel “Eugene Onegin” is recognized as a genuine “encyclopedia of Russian life”, since it contains a comprehensive description of the life of the nobility of the early 19th century. Country life, traditions, activities and habits of the inhabitants of the estates - all this was reflected in the text, when creating which Alexander Pushkin relied on his own memories of the owners of the Zakharovo and Trigorskoye estates.
Pushkin describes the Larins with the words “a simple Russian family,” thereby emphasizing the difference between the capital and local nobility of the early 19th century and pointing out the less elegant manners of the latter. Nevertheless, some customs and habits were common to the entire noble circle. An integral part of women’s daily activities was needlework; girls were taught it from childhood. Children in noble families were brought up comprehensively, became acquainted with etiquette and religion, learned science, literature and foreign languages, and studied music and dance. Noble education was aimed at cultivating high moral ideals, which were perceived as an integral part of the image of representatives of the upper classes.
Exhibition “Visiting the Larins. The world of a Russian estate at the beginning of the 19th century.” will give visitors the opportunity to visit literary heroes. The exhibition presents more than 150 items from the stock collections of the Moscow State United Museum-Reserve "Kolomenskoye - Izmailovo". The graphic works presented in the exhibition show the capital’s streets, village landscapes, and views of estates that a traveler could observe on the road. Fine porcelain, glass and metal products, ancient books and rare household items reveal the peculiarities of the lifestyle of the nobles of the early 19th century. Furniture sets and tiles allow us to more fully imagine the residential interiors in which the fates of the heroes of Pushkin’s novel unfolded.
