The Russian Academy of Arts presents an exhibition of works by the Honored Artist of Russia, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts Andrei Shcherbakov. "Terra-bronza" is a metaphorical name for a certain land, a certain space in which images are born, as if from magma, at the hand of an artist-demiurge, turning into a single, integral world with its own internal connections and laws. The exposition presents works of sculpture and graphics.
Andrey Alexandrovich Shcherbakov was born in Saratov in 1965. He was educated at the Saratov Art School and at the St. Petersburg Art and Industry Academy named after A. L. Stieglitz. In 2003-2006 he passed an internship at the Creative Workshop of the Volga Branch of the Russian Academy of Arts under the guidance of Academician A. V. Uchaev. Then he began to actively engage in teaching activities. A. Shcherbakov is a participant in Russian and international group exhibitions, the author of more than 30 personal exhibitions in Saratov and Russian cities. The sculptor is one of the organizers of the annual international children’s and youthful plein airs named after P. A. Maskaev, uniting young, novice artists in Khvalynsk, the homeland of K. Petrov-Vodkin.
A. Shcherbakov is the author of famous monuments, city and park sculpture. In his work, he turns to the eternal themes of art, but at the same time creates his own style, combining the features of symbolism and stormy, temperamental expressionism. Using the methods of deformation and geometric stylization of the form, in which the volumes are connected with each other by energetic lines of force, the artist considers the sculpture not as a static object, but as a kind of center of moving masses. This is typical of his works such as the monument to the Liquidators of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the sculptural composition dedicated to the People’s Artist O. Tabakov in Saratov, the monument to the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia for the Faith of Christ in Volsk and others.
The master often turns to the chamber genre, creating sculptures that embody the eternal femininity, beauty and harmony of the human body. In these works there is not a single hard edge, on the contrary, a soft and gentle plastic solution allows the artist to preserve the naturalness and beauty of nature. Such are "Judith" and "Salome" from the series "Predators", "Creation", "Waiting".
Andrey Shcherbakov is a talented graphic artist and master of easel embroidery. His author’s "Embroidered Project", which has no analogues in art, unites works made according to the samples of the old Russian technique of facial sewing "into a split", in which the artist turns to archaic and Christian symbols.
Possessing a powerful inner core, not following the fashion and not falling under the lightweight trends of the time, Andrei Shcherbakov in his inner choice of his path, the artist’s position is on the principles of serving great art, and his creative path demonstrates a unique branch of the development of the academic direction in contemporary Russian fine art. The exposition at the Russian Academy of Arts will acquaint viewers with the key works of the master.
