The heroes of this performance did not fight for their homeland with arms in hand. But without them, Leningrad would not have coped. In the besieged city, art was oxygen and fuel, medicine and miraculous prayer. And it was equally necessary for both the spirit and the body - to live. To survive.
It would seem that so much has been said and written about the Blockade of Leningrad that there is nothing to add. But still. What immediately rises before the mind’s eye? Deserted streets littered with snowdrifts. Destroyed houses. Women hunched over, wrapped in coarse kerchiefs, pulling a sled with a swaddled body. 125 grams of something so little like bread. It’s like that. But still.
From the diary, May 1942: “Spring, what fine days! On Sadovaya it is "almost" like before the war: animation, smart dresses, elegant summer suits, a lot of cosmetics. And how happy the posters are! " Yes, in a besieged, weakened city cut off from the world, people not only survived, but also lived. There were performances and concerts every day, and every day, despite the shelling and bombing, the audience filled the halls. There was no ovation - because there was no strength to applaud - but people really needed Onegin, Silva and Rachmaninov. Like windows to another life. As the most powerful argument of hope: the future will take place.
“We are artists, our job is to work. In any circumstances, ”- shrugs the shoulders of the legendary Yuri Yuriev, Meyerhold’s favorite, the brightest star of the pre-revolutionary Alexandrinka and the Soviet Theater. Pushkin. And she will confidently take the stage on the very first day of the war. He, who had survived two revolutions and the Civil one, knew for sure that this was not a reason to stop working. There is only one recipe: go forward.
This performance is an hour and a half of episodes of real life in the siege with the eyes and voices of people of the most non-military professions. Ballet, opera, drama and operetta dancers. Poets, writers and musicians. And like any life, it could not be a continuous tragedy: they managed to find many reasons for joy, notice the beauty of autumn parks and the glittering frost in the sun.
This story is completely devoid of pathos. She is full of hope, humanity and sincerity, and also - surprisingly, there is a lot of everyday humor, light and warmth in her. Indeed, with humor and a twinkle in your soul, you can overcome even the insurmountable, and this is a good lesson in our cynical era.
Each artist on this stage is a legend of his generation, in his own unique style. These six very different and very important voices merge into a fragile, quiet and very human song - the one without which a jubilant and loud victorious march is, no, impossible.
The performance is presented by the Creative brand Dance Open with the state support of the Committee for Culture of St. Petersburg Details about the performance and tickets on the website: danceopen.com
