On June 7, at 12:00 in the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (104 Lenin St., Exhibition Hall), the grand opening of the Tolstoy Family in Venice exhibition by Giulio Carlini from the collection of the State Hermitage will take place.
The exposition of the exhibition acquaints Kaluga residents and visitors with the works of the famous Italian artist of the 19th century Giulio Carlini (1826 - 1887), whose works are presented in a number of major museums in Munich, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Kazan, as well as various cities in Italy. Giulio Carlini was born and spent most of his life in Venice. He successfully worked in the field of portraiture, historical and genre painting, monumental and decorative art, participated in prestigious European exhibitions, was a member of the Raphael Academy in Urbino and the Venice Academy of Arts. In the 1880s, Carlini created 10 portraits of famous Venetians for the oldest cafe, Florian, on Piazza San Marco, which became one of Venice’s many attractions. The most glorified of them - the Doge’s Palace, Piazzetta and the Slavyanskaya embankment going from it - are captured against the background of the portrait of the Tolstoy family, exhibited at the Hermitage exhibition in Kaluga.
The painting "The Tolstoy Family in Venice" (1855) depicts Count Ivan Matveevich Tolstoy (1806 - 1867), the grandson of M. I. Kutuzov, surrounded by members of his family and close relatives. The family is preparing to take a gondola ride, which has become an obligatory attribute of Venice and one of the most attractive attractions for tourists. The faces of the characters were carefully written out, their elegant toilets were reproduced in detail and in detail. The artist remarkably conveyed the atmosphere of Venice saturated with the moisture of the lagoon, softening the contours of magnificent architectural monuments, and introduced many genre details into the picture from the life of the townspeople.
For many centuries, Italy, with its rich cultural heritage and magnificent nature, has invariably attracted the attention of travelers, and by the middle of the 19th century, it had become more than ever the most popular destination among European aristocrats. Russian nobleman Count I.M. Tolstoy, in memory of his trip to Venice, commissioned a painting from the talented local artist Giulio Carlini. Its last owner was the youngest son of the customer, Count Dmitry Ivanovich Tolstoy (1860 - 1941). D.I. Tolstoy is known as a collector, an excellent connoisseur of Western European art, the last director of the Imperial Hermitage.
