On December 11, the Historical Museum will host the opening of the exhibition “Under the Sign of the Zodiac. Cultural monuments from ancient times to the present day from the collection of the Historical Museum,” which will present unique monuments demonstrating the signs of the Zodiac and their interpretation filled with symbolism.
Among the exhibits of the exhibition are such rarities as “Svyatoslav’s Collection of 1073”, a French Book of Hours from the 1470s, a Chinese staff with a runic calendar and signs of the Zodiac, made in the mid-13th century, and much more. Some monuments will be exhibited for the first time, for example, a casket with boards for board games, including backgammon. The field for this ancient game, popular in Holland and France in the 17th century, is decorated with images of the signs of the Zodiac. The exhibition will feature more than 150 objects demonstrating how each of the twelve signs of the Zodiac was reflected in art at different times.
“The new exhibition project of the Historical Museum aims not only to demonstrate the diversity and richness of the museum’s collection, but also to trace how the interpretation of ancient symbolic images, signs of the Zodiac, has been transformed and improved in culture. These astral symbols have not lost their relevance in the modern world, to this day arousing keen interest and being a source of creative inspiration for modern masters,” says General Director of the State Historical Museum Alexey Levykin.
