The Lumiere Brothers Photography Center for the first time opens the name of the outstanding American architectural photographer of the 20th century, Ezra Stoller, to the Russian public.
The Solomon Guggenheim Museum, the former building of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Manhattan skyscrapers, TWA terminal at TWA Airport John F. Kennedy, the famous “House over the Waterfall”, a religious building of the twentieth century - the Ronshan Chapel and many other iconic architectural structures of the modernist era in the lens of one of the most influential architectural photographers will be presented at the site of the Center for Photography on Red October.
Works for the exhibition in Moscow were specially selected from the archive of Ezra Stoller. The exposition includes black and white photographs of public buildings, offices and private homes from the very beginning of his career in the late 1930s to 1970s.
For many years, Stoller worked with pioneers of modern American architecture and the most famous representatives of the modernist era, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Louis Can, Le Corbusier, Paul Rudolph and Marcel Breuer.
Stollerized (Stollerized) - so the architects called each other architecture that fell into the lens of Ezra.
Having received his initial architectural education and graduated from the Department of Industrial Design at New York University, Stoller began his career by photographing architectural models of his fellow students. He quickly realized that in photography he could achieve much more than in architecture, he made the choice in favor of two-dimensional space.
Stoller worked a lot on orders from magazines, architecture companies, manufactories, and large corporations. His photographs, published among other things in the magazines Architectural Record, Architectural Forum, Fortune and House Beautiful, have made a significant contribution to the popularization of the new direction.
According to the Pulitzer Prize winner, American architectural critic, writer and columnist for The New Yorker magazine Paul Goldberger: “His photographs are without a doubt one of the most frequently reproduced. They played an important role in shaping the public perception of what modern architecture is. ”
Although Stoller positioned himself as a commercial photographer, the artistic qualities of his work are not in doubt and make him an influential figure in the history of architectural photography. Already in 1950, his work became part of the Color Photography exhibition, curated by Edward Steichen, the legendary director of the MOMA photography department in New York. The exhibition also featured works by Ancel Adams, Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and Erwin Blumenfeld.
Ezra Stoller was the first photographer to receive a gold medal from the American Institute of Architecture in 1961, with the wording for "shaping our perceptions of modern architecture."
Photographs of the author are stored in the collections of major museums in the USA, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Within the framework of the exhibition, the Center for Photography implements an extensive educational program: lectures, discussions, film screenings and regular curatorial excursions.
The project was implemented jointly with the Museum of Architecture. A.V. Schuseva. Guest Architect of the Exhibition: Julia Napolova, PS Culture.
