SISTEMA GALLERY, together with the Summer Day Foundation, presents the exhibition Don’t Look Back, which will run from January 25 to March 11, 2023. The exhibition will feature works by Alexei Retinsky, Vladimir Brodarsky, Ivan Pokidyshev and Leonid Rotar. The exposition will include works of video art, sculpture, painting and installation, touching upon the themes of corporality, temporality of being and eschatology.
Despite the fact that the participants of the project belong to different generations, each of them managed to accurately formulate the modern worldview of the society, striving to live for today, without looking back and not guessing the future. The works of artists are distinguished by emotional fullness, but lack realistic clarity and specific details. Monochrome colors, blurry lines, fading contours, missing facial features convincingly convey a sense of the movement of time, where living every moment has its own value.
A graduate of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, sculptor Vladimir Brodarsky prefers figurative art. Widely using sacred texts, myths and legends of different peoples in his work, he continues the traditions of the old masters who embodied their ideas in the images of the human body.
Ivan Pokidyshev graduated from the workshop of monumental painting of the Russian Academy of Arts. His luminous laconic compositions, created even in a small format, have the effect of a powerful, monumental form. The artist works in a unique thermography technique that allows you to capture thermal radiation.
The work of the Moscow artist Leonid Rotar goes back to the ideas of metaphysical painting and, at the same time, refers to the neoclassicism of the 1930s. A graduate of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography named after S. A. Gerasimov, he brilliantly conveys the effect of a stopped frame, in which rapidly moving figures and detailed images find themselves in a special world, devoid of the boundaries of space and time.
Alexei Retinsky is a composer and artist. His work is widely acclaimed as a unique combination of traditional techniques and contemporary themes that, while always relevant, remain deeply personal. The exhibition will feature paintings by Retinsky, created in mixed media, as well as an electro-acoustic composition "Form of the Past Tense", specially created for the "Don’t Look Back" project.
