The artist’s third exhibition at the Academy bears the same organic and playful title - Thought Phrases - as previous projects - Counterpoints (2012) and Reflexes (2018). Emphasizing the idea of ​​a retrospective commemorative exhibition, a small but capacious exposition reveals the main distinguishing feature of the creative biography of Yevgeny Vakhtangov - the tireless search for a new visual language of painting, collage and graphics.

Graduate of the MGAHI them. V. I. Surikov, Evgeny Sergeevich began to work in a realistic manner, largely dictated by the influence of the Moscow school of painting. In the 1970s, he was a master of the urban landscape, creating images of the city in smoky, silver-pearl tones. In addition to landscapes, the artist turns to the genre of still life, in which, as if following in the footsteps of Giorgio Morandi, he finds his object of observation - a porcelain or ceramic teapot, which loses its utilitarian function in the figurative intimacy of the transmitted volume and the harmony of the found environment.

In the early 1980s, leaving the development of the landscape genre and still life, the artist became interested in colorful abstractions. A few years later, in 1983, Vakhtangov, continuing his search and focusing on expression and emotional experience, came to aesthetic minimalism, in which he limited himself to a few bright strokes on a contrasting monochromatic background.
