On March 1 at 16.00 at the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts (Lenin St., 103) the opening of the exhibition “My Lukomorye. Turgenev’s Places through the Eyes of Artists” will take place from the funds of the State Memorial and Natural Museum-Reserve of I. S. Turgenev “Spasskoye-Lutovinovo”.
The poetic title of the exhibition is associated not only with the famous work of A. S. Pushkin, but also with the work of the outstanding Soviet poet Leonid Martynov (1905–1980), who in his poem “Lukomorye”, written in 1945, revealed the image of the “Legendary Land of Old Fairy Tales” - Lukomorye" as a collective image of the Motherland.
Every person also has the concept of a “small Motherland,” which for I. S. Turgenev was the estate of his mother Spasskoye-Lutovinovo in the Mtsensk region of the Oryol province. Here he spent his childhood, after the death of his mother he became the owner of the estate.
I. S. Turgenev came here several times and lived for a long time. On the estate he wrote his most famous works “The Noble Nest”, “On the Eve”, “Fathers and Sons” and a number of others. The last time the writer visited the estate was in 1881. Later, while living in France, I. S. Turgenev wrote to Ya. P. Polonsky in Russia: “When you are in Spassky, bow from me to the house, the garden, my young oak tree, bow to the homeland, which I will probably never see again.” I. S. Turgenev could well call Spasskoye-Lutovinovo “My Lukomorye”.
Nowadays, the restored estate houses the State Memorial and Natural Museum-Reserve “Spasskoye-Lutovinovo”. The museum’s collection contains about 150 Turgenev items that previously belonged to the writer and his ancestors. The exhibition presents authentic works of painting and graphics by N. E. Sverchkov, M. K. Klodt, N. D. Dmitriev-Orenburgsky, views of Spassky-Lutovinov, made in the 19th century by Ya. P. Polonsky. The manor house is surrounded by an ancient park, which, like the surrounding area of the estate, has become a source of inspiration for many generations of Russian artists.
At the exhibition “My Lukomorye. Turgenev places through the eyes of artists” presents about seventy works by Russian artists and graphic artists who captured the estate and the surrounding area of the estate. The beauty and unique charm of central Russia, Spassky-Lutovinov and its environs are conveyed by the landscapes of Mtsensk, Oryol, Tula and Moscow artists: S. I. Prokopova, Yu. A. Kozlenkova, N. N. Antonova, V. I. Kuznetsova, G. V. Dyshlenko, Yu. V. Zhigalova. A true sense of nature, a true eye, good taste, excellent schooling - all this is inherent in the landscapes of the listed masters. Artists do not illustrate Turgenev, they simply admire the same places, the same beauty that inspired the great writer. “Work on the landscape of these places,” said Yu. V. Zhigalov, “can never stop. It will be enough for many, many generations, because everyone will find their own here, reveal “their face.”
Speaking about the mystery of Russian art, one of the French writers complained to Turgenev: “In our creativity, we only worry about beauty, but you write the truth, and beauty comes by itself.” It is this true sense of nature that gives life to the works presented at the exhibition.
In addition to works of painting and graphics, the exhibition included works of decorative and applied art. Here you can see individual memorial items from the museum-estate: candlesticks, wall decorations of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, pre-revolutionary editions of the works of I. S. Turgenev.
The exhibition is designed for a wide range of visitors, it introduces not only the landscapes of Russian and Soviet artists who captured Turgenev’s places, but also the history of the estate, it shows the importance that Spasskoye-Lutovinovo occupies in the history of Russian culture and in the work of I. S. Turgenev.
