This year opens a number of commemorative anniversary dates in the history of fine art of Irkutsk. First of all, this is the 85th anniversary of the Irkutsk branch of the Union of Artists of Russia, the celebration of which during the year will be marked by a series of large exhibition projects. Of the masters of the older generation whose anniversary falls on the current year, the most “age” was Alexander Pavlovich Krylov (1912–1975), who stood at the origins of the revival of the cultural life of the city in the postwar period. This year’s 95th anniversary is celebrated by Yevgeny Vladimirovich Shpirko (1922–2014) and Arkady Ilyich Guterzon (1922–1981), two remarkable masters of landscape and portrait genres. Both artists are veterans of World War II. In general, the theme of war occupies a special place in their work and passes through their whole lives with a fine thread, while portraits of contemporaries, which are an example of high artistic and philosophical generalization and psychologism, have become real pearls of the exposition.

The recognized classics of Siberian painting include Yevtey Semenovich Simonov (1927–2004) and Vladimir Vladimirovich Tetenkin (1927–2009). Their great influence on the formation of subsequent generations of Irkutsk painters is undeniable. Today, the traditions of Simonov’s realistic symbolism and Tetenkin’s lyrical worldview are felt in the works of Anatoly Kostovsky, Yuri Karnaukhov, Dmitry Lysyakov and many other Irkutsk artists.
