In the final concert of the Red Wheel cycle, three compositions will be presented, lining up in a line parallel to the track of the red wheel, which rolled deep into history, but in the opposite perspective. The second chamber symphony of Roslavets is an amazing monument of the era when major artists, one after another, lined up along the line of party leadership in art, trying to preserve at least some individual features of the style. This music was written for the same “breakthrough” composition for those years as the First Symphony, sounded in the first concert of the cycle, but its language is completely different, “realistic”. However, this is by no means a story about the "death and surrender of the Soviet intellectual", characteristic of the mid-30s. One texture and instrumentation indicate that Roslavets enters into a difficult and whimsical dialogue with the “realism” of the 19th century, the epic statement of the Borodino plan, building his own stylistic model. This mimicry, however, did not save the symphony from being banned - it lay in the composer’s archive until the beginning of the 21st century, until the Ensemble “New Music Studio” first performed it in 2002. The symphony is extremely difficult to perform and is now practically not played. However, just these days the ensemble is recording a disc with both chamber symphonies of Roslavets. Zhivotov’s Fragments for Nonet, written using the cluster technique, was extremely fashionable in the late 1920s. and the reconstruction of the music of Prokofiev’s ballet The Trapeze (much more often in a truncated form like the Quintet), as it were, complement the huge canvas of Nikolai Roslavets’s symphony with two more stylistic poles.
