From November 28 to December 21, 2024, the Borey Gallery will host the fourth exhibition prepared by the Northern Auction House: “Konstantin Kundyshev (1964–2003): artist vs. the 90s”.
The last exhibition of this artist took place in 2005, for almost 20 years no one saw his paintings, the artist’s name was almost forgotten. Quite by chance, several of his works ended up in the Northern Auction House, and since then the great story of the (re)discovery of Konstantin Kundyshev has begun.
Konstantin Kundyshev was a young man brought up in an intelligent family, a professional judoka and a brave adventurous guy. Formation in the late 1980s, imprisonment, active creative work in the 1990s, early death in the early 2000s in the era before the mass Internet - during his life he failed to gain a foothold in the history of contemporary St. Petersburg art.
The main part of Konstantin Kundyshev’s artistic heritage has been preserved intact and not scattered. The works presented at the exhibition have been lying untouched for many years. On the one hand, many of them have retained their authentic design. On the other hand, they clearly show signs of time - yellowed varnish, crumbling paint layer.
These paintings and the ones behind them depict the life of the artist in the 1980s and 1990s, whose biography and work argues with and echoes the changes that were happening to his contemporaries throughout the country.
