The Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts announces a competition for the best design of the monument to the founder of the museum, Nikanor Ivanovich Vasiliev, dedicated to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Pushkin Museum.
The aim of the competition is to perpetuate the memory of the founder of the Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts, collector and philanthropist N. I. Vasiliev and expand the knowledge of the population about him.
To participate in the competition are invited: sculptors, artists, art historians, students of art schools, students of children’s art schools, other institutions of additional education in the city of Kaluga and the region.
The competition is held from June 1 to December 15, 2018.
The Kaluga Museum of Fine Arts owed its creation in June 1918 to the unselfish gift of the Kaluga collector and philanthropist Nikanor Ivanovich Vasiliev. In December 1905, N. I. Vasiliev made a will, according to which his house, art collection and all property were transferred to the city in the person of the zemstvo.
On June 12, 1918, the Kaluga Pravda newspaper announced the opening of a Soviet art gallery in the city, which was based on the house and art collection of N. I. Vasiliev. For the provincial Kaluga of those years, the museum that opened in the house of Nikanor Ivanovich Vasilyev became the Kaluga Tretyakov Gallery and the Hermitage at the same time. Here, many Kaluga residents for the first time were able to get acquainted with Russian and world art classics, for many the gallery became a window into the world of art.
As part of the competition, a final exhibition will be held in the museum from November 8 to December 15, 2018.
