The fate of the Leningrad-Petersburg poplars - fast-growing giant trees, symbols of the spring of 1950-1960s, which became a real nightmare for city business executives by the end of the 1990s, in a photo project with the lyric narration of St. Petersburg artist and compassionate townsman Georgy Zakharov.
When in 1999 on the Ogorodny Lane, where I lived for more than 50 years, all poplars planted in the 50s were cut to the root, nothing trembled in my soul. Moreover, I experienced a feeling of gloating and relief - finally. And in this momentary mood of mine there was an echo of irritation accumulated over the past twenty years. I’m tired of this poplar tops, which covered the sun in my window with a thick wall, this poplar fluff that terrorized the whole city for three weeks in a row every summer. I didn’t like them for the garbage they sprinkled on the city, for the awkward crown, for the obsessive monotony of their presence on all streets and courtyards, as if not in the nature of other trees. But it was not always so. In the 50-60s, the attitude towards them was different. This ambivalent attitude towards them on the part of the townspeople accompanied their presence in the city in the second half of the 20th century.
