The Collectors Club presents an exhibition of paintings and graphics by artists from the Russian diaspora of the early twentieth century "See you in Paris", within which it will show for the first time many works from the collections of members of the art club. The exhibition will be held from February 3 to February 28, 2021 at the Artefact gallery center.
The exposition will include about 40 paintings by world famous Russian artists who lived and worked in Europe after 1917. Among the authors of the works are: Konstantin Korovin, Zinaida Serebryakova, Konstantin Somov, Ivan Pokhitonov, Alexander Benois, Konstantin Gorbatov, Alexander Yakovlev, Sergey Vinogradov, Arnold Lakhovsky and other artists who left Russia.
By the beginning of the 20th century, almost every Russian artist had to visit Paris. Many painters and sculptors began to exhibit, including at Parisian exhibitions, to receive medals and prizes. For example, in 1912 in the Autumn Salon in Paris there were 48 participants from Russia, and in 1914 in the Salon of the Independent - 78. The number of personal exhibitions of Russian painters abroad grew.
It is customary to refer to the artists of the Russian emigration as the masters who were born on the territory of the Russian Empire before 1917 and lived abroad during the period between the two world wars, whose fate and work are associated with Russia and Russian culture, regardless of their place of birth, nationality, religious beliefs, political views. The capital of France became the largest center of Russian emigration in the 1920s - 1930s. And the work of Russian emigrants abroad in the aggregate constituted such a phenomenon as the art of the Russian diaspora.
The most famous Russian emigrant and singer of Paris was Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939). Four of his works are on display at the exhibition. The artist has captured the views of the French capital many times, in different states, but his night views are especially famous (the exhibition presents "Night Boulevard in Paris" 1927, "Paris. Night Cafe", 1929). At the beginning of 1923. with the assistance of Commissioner A. V. Lunacharsky (he contributed to the departure of many artists) Korovin went abroad with his family to treat his son Alexei and hold a personal exhibition. He did not return to the USSR. Once in exile, Korovin tirelessly continued to paint his favorite Parisian boulevards, bright signs, noisy streets.
Zinaida Serebryakova (1884-1967) has her own Parisian history. She moved to France in 1924. And at the end of the 1920s in neighboring Brussels during an exhibition she met the patron of the arts, Baron J.-A. de Brouwer, who later sponsored many of the artist’s projects and travels. In 1931. the baron ordered Serebryakova portraits of his entire family. The exhibition features a pastel portrait of the Baron’s daughter, Marianne Brouwer.
A significant part of the creative life of Konstantin Somov (1869-1930) is associated with Paris. Organizer of the society and magazine "World of Art", he was very popular in pre-revolutionary Russia and Europe, participated in many group and solo exhibitions. From 1925 he lived in France. The most famous erotic illustrations by Somov, The Book of the Marquise, were published first in German and later in French. The painting "Le succube" (1923), presented at the exhibition, plays on the usual for the artist an erotic plot with the night appearance of a demon woman to a young man, comes from the collection of B. Kustodiev. He and Somov exchanged works on a similar topic.
The most interesting stories of the creation of the paintings presented at the exhibition can be read in the catalog published for the project.
With the "See you in Paris" project, the Collectors Club begins an active exhibition and educational activity, designed for a wide range of spectators. “The exhibiting members of our art club are experienced collectors and it is a great fortune that they will allow the public to become familiar with part of their collections. Thanks to the works provided, we have the opportunity to learn something new about the artists who created them and share this knowledge with the visitors of the exhibition, ”emphasize Sevon and Ruben Yazychian, founders and leaders of the Collections Club.
