When Kenzo Tange was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1987, he became the first Japanese architect to receive the award. For 30 years, seven more architects from Japan have consistently received the award, thereby finally confirming the leadership of the architectural school of the Land of the Rising Sun. If in the mid-1960s or 1970s only specialists knew about Japanese architects, today buildings designed by Tadao Ando, Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, Kazuyo Sejima, So Fujimoto and many other authors can be seen far beyond outside of Japan. What is the secret of the success of this school, what distinguishes them from others
and distinguish from each other, can we talk about the "Japanese wave" in the architecture of the XXI century? The series of lectures, arranged chronologically, is intended to demonstrate the development of Japanese architecture from the late 1960s to the present, through the evolution of the work of individual architects.
Lecturer — Anna Guseva, art historian, PhD (University of Tokyo), Associate Professor at the HSE School of Historical Sciences. Specialist in the history of Japanese architecture, garden art and urban planning in Japan and Russia, as well as the history of art collecting in Japan and China.

Modernism or minimalism?
When it comes to the style of modern Japanese architecture, the following associations usually come to mind: a minimum of details, the use of concrete as one of the main materials, restrained colors and an abundance of empty space. What are the strengths and weaknesses of Japanese minimalism? What is its originality? At the lecture, we will look for answers to these questions, considering the projects of Yoshio Taniguchi, Tadao Ando and the architectural bureau SANAA.
