Having forever linked his life with the Moscow Art Theatre in 1900, V. I. Kachalov was a popular artist for almost half a century, discussed by many generations of viewers. The most beloved actor of the Russian intelligentsia, who delighted A. P. Chekhov and M. Gorky.

On the stage of the Art Theatre V. I. Kachalov played more than 55 roles, almost all of them leading ones. At the exhibition visitors will get acquainted with the most important roles in the career of the People’s Artist: Tsar Berendey in the play "Snegurochka", Tuzenbach and Vershinin in the play "Three Sisters", Pyotr Trofimov in the play "The Cherry Orchard", Julius Caesar and Hamlet by W. Shakespeare, Brand by G. Ibsen, Kareno in the play "At the Gates of the Kingdom", Anatem by L. N. Andreyev, Ivan Karamazov and Nikolai Stavrogin in dramatizations of the works of F. M. Dostoevsky and others.
V. I. Kachalov adhered to several important principles in his life: to be attentive, generous to people, delicate, tactful and modest; to be demanding in work; not to abandon colleagues in difficult circumstances; to be a professional and believed that it is not enough to play different roles well, you need to be born again in each one.
Pavel Vashchilin, Director of the Moscow Art Theatre Museum: “The exhibition will open with a sketch in the genre of “An Interview Comes to Life,” in which fourth-year students of the Moscow Theatre College named after L. A. Filatov will reflect on the question “To be or not to be.” Being Kachalov is not a matter of choice, but a reflection of recognition and respect for the great Russian actor – Vasily Ivanovich Kachalov.”
Guests of honor and artists from the A.P. Chekhov Moscow Art Theater are expected to attend the opening of the exhibition.
The exhibition will feature sketches of scenery and costumes for the performances, friendly caricatures, witty caricatures by V. I. Kachalov himself, unique photographs in life and on stage, Gaev’s costume from “The Cherry Orchard”, priceless fragments of video recordings, and props.
The exhibition “Kachalov – Chatsky”, which will open in the House-Museum of K.S. Stanislavsky in March, will tell about the work of V.I. Kachalov in the play by A.S. Griboyedov “Woe from Wit”.
